Tournament Rules

Rules: Based on WSKA Shobu-Ippon. Please make yourself familiar with scoring criteria etc. Download here:

WSKA Rules

Shobu-Ippon kumite is a traditional sparring format in karate, emphasizing the principle of "one decisive blow." In this competition, the objective is to score an Ippon, or a full point, by delivering a clean, powerful, and well-controlled technique that demonstrates potential to end the match decisively. The bout is judged by a panel of referees who award points based on the precision, timing, and effectiveness of strikes, kicks, and blocks. A match can also be won by accumulating two Waza-ari (half-points). The Shobu-Ippon format emphasizes the importance of technical excellence, strategic thinking, and mental focus, reflecting the core values and discipline of traditional karate.

If you or any of your senior students are experienced in officiating and would like to volunteer, please let us know and we would be glad to utilize them!
